With the second half of November upon us, it’s time to turn those Halloween pumpkins into pies and a Butterball into the focal point of your upcoming holiday feast. Thanksgiving will be celebrated on Thursday, November 28, and families across the country are finalizing their dinner menus as well as their table settings. In addition, traditionalists are planning to count their blessings while more than a quarter plan to buck a traditional family day in and hit up holiday shopping for great deals. No matter how you decide to celebrate, here are a few fun facts about this beloved holiday and a look at Thanksgiving by the numbers.

♦  The first Thanksgiving on record was held by Plymouth colonists and members of the Wampanoag Indian tribe in 1621.
♦  More than 260 years later, Abraham Lincoln deemed Thanksgiving a national holiday in the midst of the civil war in 1863.
♦  According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 45 million turkeys are cooked and eaten in across the nation at Thanksgiving — that’s one sixth of all turkeys sold in the U.S. each year.
♦  More than 3.5 million people are expected to line the streets of Manhattan for the 87th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, with another 50 million tuning in on the television.
♦  Millions of viewers giving thanks for football rivalries are expected to tune to watch the following three Thanksgiving Day games: Packers at the Lions, Raiders at the Cowboys and Steelers at the Ravens.

♦  K-Mart will be the first retailer to open on Thanksgiving at 6 a.m. and will continue to serve as a shopping destination for 41 straight hours until close at 11 p.m. on Friday.
